Now that I’ve been off my leukemia medication (Gleevec) for 2 weeks, all of my side effects have gone away. I lost about 7 lbs. of water weight, didn’t have piggy eyes and didn’t have nausea. I was feeling pretty good.
I saw Dr. Yee yesterday, and had my usual blood tests done. My platelets were completely NORMAL. Yippy! My hemoglobin and WBC are slowly recovering. Yay! Everything was just great, like I was NORMAL again, except that Dr. Yee told me to restart the Gleevec. Dr. Yee didn’t have to remind me, but she did, that I could not be off Gleevec for too long, that the leukemia will come back. Therefore, *SIGH*, I will restart Gleevec tonight. I know it is saving my life, but I dread the side effects…weight gain, puffiness, eye bleed, nausea…the list goes on. I just pray it won’t be so bad this time around. I also pray that the medicine will not suppress my blood counts so badly this time around.
The results of the bone marrow aspiration/biopsy I did before the holidays are still not back yet. I guess no one was working over the holidays. No news on a suitable donor match yet, although Dr. Yee said she was going to look into it for me.
We are having another stem cell donor drive on Wednesday, January 16, 2013. It will be open to the public and will be held at the offices of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC), from 9am – 5pm. I have to thank my dear friend Timothy Fitzsimmons and his firm, FMC, for providing the venue. Thank you Tim!!! Again, I thank all of the organizers and volunteers, including the Other Half and OneMatch for their support as well! If you have any ideas on how to get the word out in respect of this drive, please let me know! We want to do a great job at promoting it.
