Yesterday, I caught a snippet on the news about an “issue” at the Canadian Blood Services (CBS). Being a regular user of their services, I had to find out what the issue was.

Apparently, CBS had recalled 1,500 units of blood because they were not properly tested for cytomegalovirus (CMV). Of course, they reported that this should be of little risk to most of the population, except that a small number of patients, including bone marrow transplant patients, require CMV-negative blood. Soooooo…that would include ME! I am already CMV-positive so I don’t know if this would affect me in any negative way.

This is definitely disconcerting as some transplant patients don’t make it through a CMV infection. I’ll ask questions next time I’m at the hospital and hope to get some answers. Will keep you posted.

  1. it would only affect you, if like me, you were not CMV positive already – but since you have tested positive for CMV before it would not re-activate your CMV…
