How You Can Help

You can help Winnie and other patients like her by doing one or any number of the following:

1. Register to be a stem cell donor
2. Donate blood regularly
3. Volunteer your time
4. Make a financial donation
5. Spread the word
6. Follow Winnie’s journey and comment on this blog

1. Register to be a stem cell donor

If you live in Canada, and are between the ages of 17 and 50, please register online to become a stem cell donor at www.onematch.ca.  Also, check the Upcoming Events page to see if there are any upcoming stem cell donor drives near you.

For additional information, please contact OneMatch via email at onematch@blood.ca or by calling 1-888-2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283).

Hong Kong

If you live in Hong Kong, please contact the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service via email at  rcbts@ha.org.hk or by phone at 2710-1234.  Additional information can be found on their website: www5.ha.org.hk/rcbts/template?series=46.

China

If you live in China, please contact the China Marrow Donor Program via email at qi.liu@cmdp.org.cn  /  dan.cai@cmdp.org.cn or by phone at +86-10-65221901.  Additional information can be found on their website at www.cmdp.org.cn.

All other countries

For all other countries, please contact your local bone marrow registry for additional information.

2. Donate blood regularly

You can help by donating your blood on a regular basis.  According to Canadian Blood Services, leukemia patients like Winnie require 8 units of blood a week.  One donation will produce only one unit of blood.

The eligibility critera for blood donation is less stringent than for stem cell donation.  Generally, if you are between the ages of 17 and 61, you can donate blood every 56 days.  Donors beyond age 61 can also donate with physician’s approval.  If you are in Canada, please visit www.blood.ca for additional information.

3. Volunteer your time

You can help by volunteering your time to the cause, such as assisting with an upcoming stem cell donor drive or hosting a drive within your network (e.g., church, company, club, etc.).  We are always looking for dedicated volunteers!  For additional information, please contact the Other Half by email at info@chinesestemcell.ca or by phone at 416-901-9916.  The Other Half’s website is at www.chinesestemcell.ca/.

4.  Make a financial donation

You can help by making a financial donation to organizations such as the Other Half, a registered charitable organization with the mission of increasing the number of stem cell donor registrants of Chinese origin in the stem cell registry worldwide.  To donate financially, click on the following link: www.chinesestemcell.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=210&Itemid=172&lang=stemeng02.  Financial donations are very important for the Other Half to fulfill their mission.

5. Spread the word

You can help by spreading the word to as many people as possible:

6. Follow Winnie’s journey and comment on this blog

You can help Winnie by following her journey and actively commenting on this blog.  It is her intention to personally post on  this blog on a regular basis, if she is feeling well.  She would love to see followers like you and would look forward to receiving any comments you may have.  Please, talk to Winnie as a sign of your support!  Thank you!
